Linked Search

A linked search is a great way for you to locate a data asset by linking the search to a secondary data object type.

For example:

  • Searching for a table name by searching for a column name

  • Searching for a column by searching within a schema, database or table

How to use Linked Search

There are 4 key steps to perform a linked search

Step 1) Confirm the object type search parameters

  • You need to first confirm the type of asset you want to find

  • Based on what you select (e.g. column), K will then provide a list of available object types that you can search by. For example, if you want to locate a column, then you can search by: Table, Schema or Database

Step 2) Refine search parameters for the primary data object type you are looking for

  • After you confirm the object type, the search view will first default to the primary object type you are searching for

  • Enter the search parameter you are looking for

  • Add an update filters to help narrow the results

Step 3) Refine search parameters for the secondary object type you are searching

  • Click on the next Search view (e.g. Search Columns in below screenshot)

  • In this view you can see what the search parameters and filter settings were added to the primary data object (e.g. Table search)

  • Based on this the revised list of tables, the available list of columns too search from has already been narrowed

  • Update the Search name and filters for this view to further refine the results

Step 4) Revisit the primary Data Object Search view

  • Return to the first primary data object search view (e.g. Search Tables in below screenshot)

  • In the Column Search row, you will now see the search parameters that were added in the secondary search view

  • By adding the ‘Name’ search in this example, you can see that the Total search results have reduced from 20 in Step 2, to now 1 result. This means that there is only 1 table (vindividual customer) that matches all search criteria and filters. In this example they were:

    • Table Source: Adventureworks

    • Table search word: Customer

    • Column search word: Name

Tip: You can continually toggle between the two search views to refine your search results

Performing Bulk Action or Bulk Update on Linked Search Results

To perform a bulk action, you need to first click Save As, to save the Linked Search as a Filter.

After you’ve created the saved filter, you can run a bulk action or bulk update on the Primary Data Object (e.g. list of tables in below screenshot) from the filters page. The bulk update will not impact and returned data assets from the secondary data object search that was used to refined the Primary data object search.

If you try to click on the bulk action icon directly from the Linked Search page, an error message will pop up.
