K's Usage Metrics let you understand how a data asset is used and where it is in its lifecycle. By tracking and surfacing usage patterns, K gives data producers, owners, and stewards the insight they need to manage and prioritise their data assets effectively.
What Usage Metrics Tell You
K automatically collects and analyses usage signals across integrated data sources and tools. For each data asset, Usage Metrics can surface:
-
Who is using the asset, and how frequently
-
When it was last accessed or queried
-
Where in the data ecosystem it is consumed (e.g. reports, downstream pipelines)
-
Lifecycle stage — whether the asset is actively used, declining, or unused
How It's Used
Usage Metrics feed into several K features:
-
Trust Score — usage frequency and recency contribute to an asset's overall trust and relevancy ranking
-
Data Profiles — usage data is surfaced on each asset's Data Profile Page for quick reference
-
Top Users — K identifies the most frequent users of each asset, enabling targeted Q&A and knowledge sharing
-
Data Lineage — Understand which users are impacted by data changes across the data lineage
Where to View Usage Information
K surfaces usage metrics in several places. Depending on your role and what you're looking for, you can access usage data via:
-
Usage Tab — View usage stats, top users, and teams for any individual data asset directly from its Data Profile page. Includes usage type definitions and frequency breakdowns.
-
Usage Dashboard — Drill down on usage across your entire data ecosystem via the Dashboard & Insights page. Available to Data Managers and Administrators. Particularly useful for migration planning and identifying actively used assets at scale.
-
Ask K — Usage Exports — Export usage data as a spreadsheet using Ask K. Supports asset usage summaries, usage by user, usage by asset, and usage by tool. Exports can be scheduled and delivered automatically via email.
