Data Governance

K helps data governance teams fast-track the process of understanding their data ecosystem and designing the right governance framework. K's Data Governance features automate manual classification work, centralise data quality management, surface actionable insights, and bring governance context directly into the tools the business already uses — so the right people always have the right information.

Data Governance features are primarily available to users with Data Manager, Data Governance Manager, or Administrator roles.

The Data Governance workflow

Effective data governance in K starts with classification. K's built-in PII scanner automatically identifies sensitive columns across integrated sources — flagging them on Data Profiles and surfacing them in governance dashboards. Automated Data Tagging then ensures that newly ingested assets are consistently classified at scale using business rules — so governance gaps don't accumulate as the estate grows.

With classification in place, governance teams measure and manage quality. Managing Data Quality brings DQ results from tools like Great Expectations, dbt, and Snowflake Data Metrics Functions into K — letting teams track scores across six quality dimensions, assign accountability to owners and stewards, and log issues directly from test results. Dashboard & Insights then gives governance managers a suite of tailored dashboards to monitor KPIs across ownership, quality, usage, and open issues — all in one place.

From there, teams act at scale. Performing Tasks in Bulk lets governance managers update properties, cascade changes through data hierarchies, edit metadata via Excel upload, and map lineage relationships — across hundreds of assets at once. And Embedded Governance closes the loop by surfacing live governance context — ownership, classification, open issues, and warnings — directly inside Power BI and Tableau reports, so data consumers always have the right context where they work.

Features

Feature

Description

Detect PII

Built-in scanners that automatically identify Personally Identifiable Information across integrated data sources. Detection combines column name pattern matching, data sampling, and configurable custom rules. Flagged columns are surfaced on Data Profile pages with suggested tags, and PII assets appear in governance dashboards so owners can prioritise remediation.

Automate Data Tagging

Business rules that automate data tagging at scale — removing the manual effort of classification and ensuring new assets are tagged consistently the moment they are ingested. Rules can be based on column names, data types, source schemas, or PII detection results, and applied tags are fully traceable back to the rules that created them.

Managing Data Quality

A centralised hub for storing, tracking, and acting on data quality results from tools like Great Expectations, dbt, and Snowflake Data Metrics Functions. DQ results are surfaced on Data Profile pages and aggregated across domains, collections, and use cases. Teams can assign ownership to tests, track scores across six quality dimensions, and raise issues directly from failing tests. Embedded Governance

Surfaces live governance context — ownership, classification, open issues, and warning notices — directly inside Power BI and Tableau reports via an embeddable widget. Available in a compact format (category, owner, classification at a glance) or a detailed format (full profile summary with sheets, terms, governance, and linked knowledge). Any updates made in K appear in the BI tool in real time. See also: Adding the Embedded Governance Link into a Power BI report · Hiding Sheets in Detailed Embedding

Dashboard & Insights

A suite of tailored dashboards for governance managers, Data Owners, and Data Stewards to monitor key metrics across their estate. Covers governance health (ownership, classification, lineage quality), data quality trends by domain and collection, usage and complexity insights for migration planning, issue tracking, and platform load status. Dashboards refresh daily and are accessible to Data Manager, Governance Manager, and Administrator roles only. See also: Data Owner & Steward Dashboards

Performing Tasks in Bulk

A suite of tools to update metadata and relationships across large numbers of assets without editing each one individually. Covers bulk property updates and tag assignments, cascading changes from parent assets down through all children, offline editing via Excel upload, and bulk-creating lineage links where automated lineage is unavailable. Available to Governance Managers, Data Managers, and Administrators. See also: Bulk Action · Cascade Update · Bulk Edit via Excel Upload · Bulk Lineage Mapper

Who this is for

Primarily Data Governance Managers, Data Managers, and K Administrators. Data Owners and Data Stewards will interact with their personal dashboards and assigned quality tests.
