Detect PII

K has built-in Personally Identifiable Information (PII) scanners that can quickly identify potential PII located in your data tables and columns. This helps data governance teams understand where sensitive data lives and take appropriate action.

How It Works

K's PII detection automatically scans integrated data sources and flags columns that may contain personally identifiable information. Detection is based on a combination of:

  • Column name patterns — names like email, phone_number, date_of_birth, ssn, etc.

  • Data sampling — K samples column values to identify PII-like patterns (e.g. email format, phone number format)

  • Configurable rules — administrators can define custom detection rules to match organisation-specific PII definitions

What Happens After Detection

Once potential PII is identified, K:

  • Flags the column with a PII indicator visible on the Data Profile Page

  • Suggests appropriate tags that data stewards can review and apply

  • Surfaces PII assets in governance dashboards so owners can prioritise remediation
